A Moment Apart - ODESZA

“Do you know that story of the Russian cosmonaut?”

It’s an odd way to begin an electronic album seemingly filled with songs about love, or more accurately not having it. It does, however, effectively set the tone for the music itself. A Moment Apart, ODESZA’s third LP, is loaded with spacey melodies and harmonies. If you only pay attention to the sounds you may, in fact, make the mistake that you are floating through the great unknown. The lyrics (on those songs that contain them), tell a markedly different story – a missed connection at a party, the heartbreak after a breakup, a longing to take someone with you in life. Every protagonist is deeply alone in their minds. As disparate as this combination seems at the outset, it suddenly comes into focus on the album’s strongest track, “Just a Memory”. As Regina Spektor remembers ex she pushed away, she feels so isolated that she wants them to return, even if it’s only just to fight. This isolation in the wake of lost love is palpable in reality, like being stranded in space with no control over when you return. Every song reinforces this notion, and by the end you can feel the pain from every voice and every note. If you love music that makes you feel something new with each listen, A Moment Apart is not to be missed.
