The Rabbit Hole – Ashe

What, exactly, is genre? The Rabbit Hole has been described, in the most basic of terms, as pop. But nowhere in the 7 tracks of this short album (or is it an EP) can I find a simple chord sequence, rhythm pattern, or melody that I could see myself mindlessly forgetting in the moments it plays on those top 40s stations we used to all tolerate. Instead, I feel fishhooks digging into my skin and pulling me with each new movement and motion of Ashe’s stellar debut.
The paradoxes are endless, stretching the jazzy shifts of Sometimes People Suck to the blissful waves of Someone to Lose (even the song titles contradict). Each song is unique and yet similar, with the musical motifs switching without warning but with a familiar production that binds them all together. Not one stands out, but that’s only because they all do. How, then, can I tell someone to listen other than to say it’s great? It’s not pop, for sure, but it’s not electronic, not R&B, not alternative, not rock. It’s just music. The kind who’s choirs I’ll be hearing in my head for months, if not longer.
