Lush – Snail Mail

This article was originally posted on the S&R Blog.

Sometimes when you listen to an artist just getting their big break, you imagine you’re hearing their entire career laid out in front of you. Despite the lack of track record or age, the confidence shines through the chord structures like a rocket ship projecting a decade or more into the future. This doesn’t exactly mean such prophecies will come to pass, but it’s exactly what you need to know to pay more attention to the work a musician will put out as they go. This is exactly what happens the moment “Pristine”, the true opening track to Snail Mail’s wonderful debut, has its first drum beat. Music doesn’t typically come this fully formed from neophytes, and when the moments continue to happen just two songs later on “Heat Wave”, you realize that this is someone special. I just hope the rocket goes exactly where I’m imagining.
