The Endless Shimmering – And So I Watch You From Afar

At the end of the day, all music has to be to be is interesting. Sure, it should be good in the process, but it cannot be good if it is not interesting. The best way to be interesting is to be unexpected, and that’s the one word I would use to describe listening to The Endless Shimmering. To fans of the band, surely this is less of a case, but to a newcomer like me, not expecting an instrumental rock band from Northern Ireland to play through the speakers, the moment I realized no words were coming felt almost like a revelation. Sure, most may bristle against the expectations modern music has bestowed upon us, that words are needed for verses and choruses, but the group eschews all to ensure the perfect listening experience. Sounds come and go, ebb and flow, and rock and roll their way to the conclusion, with nary a break in between. Once I got over the lack of lyrics, the sonic landscape of the album opened up to me, and I refused to hit pause until the very last drop of music had been squeezed out of each instrument. I know I won’t be the only one to find this endlessly interesting.
