Shapeshifter – Knuckle Puck

There’s certain kinds of music that evoke certain kinds of feelings in certain kinds of people. Some hear the strumming of acoustic guitars and transport to their college years. Some hear the dulcet tones of jazz and find themselves whisked away to a smoke-filled lounge with walls of bourbon they’ve only seen in movies. I hear the harsh-yet- melodic buzz of pop-punk, and in an instant, I’m back in my best high school memories. From the moment Knuckle Puck’s sophomore LP kicks off I’m remembering the bullshit conversations eating lunch outside near The Tank. The guitars fade in for “Gone”, and I’m riding in a car with my friends to a house party with no parents around. The memories all feel childish in the best way. Random bottles of liquor, cd players and speakers only parents could afford, and Motorola Razrs all flash past my
eyes as each song brings me closer to the 16-year- old version of myself I both miss and never want to be again. Nothing hurts like nostalgia, and nothing soothes like it either. We might become different people as we grow, but we still become stuck in our ways. I’ll always love the music I loved then, and anything new that feels old is a welcome reminder.
