The Beast Inside – My Enemies & I

If there was a musical genre more maligned in the 2000s thank Nü Metal, I can’t remember it, and despite that I loved it. It was one of those things fans either had to hide from friends or openly embrace the eye rolls that came from naming Korn and Slipknot as your favorite bands. And, sure, it’s understandable why severely down-tuned guitars and overly dramatic vocals didn’t resonate with many people, especially traditional Metal fans, but the muddled witchcraft still lives today, at least through those it influenced the most. My Enemies & I’s debut LP, “The Beast Inside”, sounds like a love letter to the best elements of that oft shunned era with none of the mess. It’s clear they have sought to make a more forward looking effort as well as an opening statement to their further careers, and with younger fans born during the time when Nü was new, it might not draw the same connection I make. I can only hope, though, that those fans of the same quarantined music this draws from find it and recall what we all secretly loved when we felt hated.
