Love is for Losers - The Longshot

If the voice of this new band on the scene’s lead singer sounds eerily familiar, that’s not your ears playing tricks on you – it is, in fact, that of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. For an artist whose songwriting has sounded nothing if not stale for the better part of the past two decades, something about his new outfit, The Longshot, that sounds almost like hitting a reset button. From the first few tracks it is clear that, rather than reinventing punk-rock for the ‘90s, Armstrong and co. are more interested in reviving ‘50s rock style with an overdriven flare. There are, of course, parts that may sound a bit too polished, the curse of a musician with limitless funds and too much studio experience, but despite the lack of harsh edges the music pulses with life that Green Day lovers haven’t felt from their music in years. I’m not going to assume this revitalizes Green Day once/if Armstrong returns to his old band, but it seems the only thing the iconic songwriter needed to find a new spark was a change of scenery and bandmates. We should all hope he doesn’t lose it again.
