I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time in my life ruminating on what qualities it takes for an artist to create a memorable debut LP, and the only trait I’ve come back to is confidence. That quality is present in every note sung by Camila Cabello, as she sings what feels like her life story into 10 tracks to launch her way into pop stardom. This doesn’t mean that she’s always belting like a diva, but she knows exactly the timbre to strike for each tone. Her opening lines are breathy and muted, allowing herself to become vulnerable at first glance, belying the strength she displays as the track and album continue on. The goal of a debut is to announce your arrival, and Camila has arrived.
