Run Deep – Deva Mahal

They say the best songs are the ones that sound familiar when you’re only listening for the first time. It’s an uncommon feeling, but when it hits that statement rings truer than any other. The first two tracks on Deja Mahal’s studio LP debut are strong in their own right, with “Can’t Call It Love” and “Snakes” playing like the statement pieces of a blues legend’s daughter looking to make her own name. But it’s the third, “Fire”, that strikes that chord you feel you’ve heard a million times before. Slow building, expertly harmonized, this is a masterpiece within a masterpiece. The peak of the album may hit early, but it by no means tapers off steep. Deja Mahal’s first album certainly does run deep, and hopefully, her career will as well.
